NAME: Spiral Jetty in Minecraft
AUTHOR: Jan Robert Leegte
DESCRIPTION: The iconic Land Art piece made by Robert Smithson in 1970 on the shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah now has a digital counterpart in Minecraft. The mud, salt crystals and basalt rocks of the original Spiral Jetty are here replaced by the blocks typical of the game. From the game’s sunrise to sunset, the sculpture stands still in the pixelated lake.
AMUSEMENT RATE: There have been numerous talks since the creation of Spiral Jetty about the preservation of the piece. Smithson died three years after his creation and did not leave precise instructions. His interest in entropy leads many to believe he would have wanted the sculpture to slowly disintegrate by itself. The many art lovers who disagree with this choice will always have this scale down digital version of the sculpture. The setting might not be as grandiose as the Great Salt Lake but it is enough to get the idea behind the artwork and this one will be here forever…
