NAME: Map of the Internet

AUTHOR: A collaboration between Vancouver-based app developer Steamclock Software, graphic designer Jeff Johnston and Peer 1 hosting.

DESCRIPTION: This interactive app allows you to wander in the immensity of the Internet. The map is a 3D visualization of the all the networks that forms the World Wide Web. There are two different viewing options, as a globe or as a network. You can also look up specific service providers or search for the trace route between your location and a destination point. A timeline lets you to see the evolution of the networks and even see its future, thanks to an algorithm predicting the expansion of the Internet. The app is available for free on the App Store and on Google Play.

AMUSEMENT RATE: We’ve featured visualizations of the Internet in the past, but the format of this one, as an app, makes it stand out. The entire web is at the tip of your finger and you can easily navigate between the millions of colorful dots that look like stars in a dark sky.
