NAME: Lynx A Camera
AUTHOR: Lynx Laboratories, a startup based in Austin, TX.
DESCRIPTION: This point-and-shoot 3D camera finally makes 3D modeling affordable. With its 14″ LCD screen, the Lynx A Camera looks like an oversized tablet. There are a 640×480 color camera and a 3D sensor mounted on the back for the capture and a joystick controller on the front to let you navigate through your models. The user interface is very simple, making it possible for everybody to use the camera. Three modes are available: scene modeling to get 3D models of environments, object modeling, especially useful for 3D-printing enthusiasts and motion capture, which can record any type of movement with no post-processing. The Lynx A Camera is currently being funded on Kickstarter. Prices range from $1,799 for the device with the object modeling feature to $2,699 and more for the three different modes.
AMUSEMENT RATE: Even though the Kinect made 3D modeling a lot easier, it was never its prime purpose and the device has its limitations. The Lynx A Camera will simplify the work of many game designers and 3D artists thanks to its easy to use interface. The device is not cheap but for the same price than a good DSLR, a whole new dimension will open up to you.
