NAME: Spiderdress

AUTHOR: Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht who specializes in fashionable technology. She collaborated with Austrian software developer Daniel Schatzmayr on this project.

DESCRIPTION: Robotic limbs on the shoulder of the dress protect the wearer from any disturbances. The animated legs react to nearby movements. They come to life if somebody comes to close. In an over-crowded world, the garment questions privacy and control. The wearer’s personal space is safe and even grows larger as the limbs stretch out in the air.

AMUSEMENT RATE: Nobody will ever bother you if you are wearing this robotic dress. People will be too scared to get near you but you might also frighten yourself. Having robotic arms on his shoulders is not the most comforting thing in the world. The design remains elegant despite the heavy technology involved in the garment. While it is perfect for a cocktail party, the dress lacks some street credibility. We’d like to see a more casual version, a hoodie or sweatpants perhaps, so we can go home safe and sound at 4am.
