NAME: Alt Minds

AUTHOR: Orange, the telecommunication company and Lexis Numérique, a French independent game design studio.

DESCRIPTION: In 2003, Eric Viennot, the co-founder of Lexis Numérique created Missing: since January  (aka In Memoriam), one of the the first ARGs (Alternate Reality Game). He’s back almost 10 years later with Alt Minds, a game which appears to be highly more ambitious than its predecessor. This transmedia experience takes you on the trail of 5 missing scientists. To help you in your quest, many tools are at your disposal, you can investigate through a smartphone app, a tablet or laptop game. Besides the web series, some clues are hidden on the Internet such as on the websites of Le Monde or Deezer. You can even have real life interactions with protagonists from the game. The game starts today for 8 weeks, each week will see a new chapter revealed. The first chapter is free but the following ones will cost 2.69€ or 14.99€ for the whole season.

AMUSEMENT RATE: A “total fiction” this complex has to be well executed and throughly thought-through to succeed. The trailer is indeed convincing so we’ll have to try out the first free chapter to see if Alt Minds delivers. Viennot thinks this transmedia format is set to replace traditional TV shows in the near future. Quite an audacious opinion, but the interactivity and adaptability to various supports will surely modify our experience as viewers and as gamers. We might end up with a pretty messed up generation, completely paranoid and so confused that it can tell the difference between reality and fiction. Hum, that should be interesting.
