The web is overcrowded by digitalis-arty visual works that you can find on every blogs and websites. Between lazy photoshop manipulations and true artistic approaches, difficult to sort out. But AMUSEMENT does, by giving chances to artist to convince the most skeptical. So, digital art or bullshit? The Lithuanian graphic designer Martynas Pavilonis aka White White Dog submits himself to the exercise, by offering us, in addition, an exclusive gallery.
White White Dog is just starting to make a name for himself online thanks to a very “dark” and surrealist style. Enough to intrigue and to question. Does the digital graphic design have a meaning beyond its disturbing aesthetics? Interview.
According to you, your dreams are your main source of inspiration. Your works being very special, we are entitled to think that your dreams must be really strange, aren’t they?
Yes, I am very inspired by my dreams. 70 % of my work is based on them. The dream has something magical and surrealist on me. It is a moment of pure honesty to oneself. We don’t hide anything, our imagination is not restrained and the images seem perfectly real. It is thus a perfect source of inspiration. I don’t think that my dreams are strange. I am just someone who has a lot of imagination and my dreams are the translation. Look at Waterfall, it is a work stemming from a dream.

Are people seduced or downright ” WTF? ” By your works?
I am really surprised to be famous to some people! I find a lot of illustrations made by me on Tumblr. I think that it is good sign, isn’t it? It is a surprise because I know very well that my style is not really “mainstream” and nevertheless I begin to receive private requests of people who want to decorate their walls! Otherwise the only one who say to me “WTF”, it is my grandfather! LOL
How would you define your style? And what place do you grant to the digital?
It is always the most difficult question for me. I don’t really know how to describe my art, and for me, it would be as to impose myself some limits. I have a very personal use of colors and shapes which identify my work perfectly compared to other people. I like the surrealism which helps me to communicate a “dramatic” side in my work. And the digital is everywhere in my art. It is the main artistic tool that I use.
Finally, what does the concept of digital art inspire you?
For me it is the same thing as traditional art, there should be a distinction. It is art. Some people say that Digital Art is too much forged to be artistic, that it’s made more by softwares than artists… But they’re wrong; it is exactly the same thing as the traditional art. It is another means of expression and for me it is the biggest artistic opportunity.
