“Oíche Mhaith” means “good night” in Irish, but we’re not so sure about the “good” part, as this little indie game (that is available for free on Newgrounds) bases its Zelda-like adventure scenario on a very dark sense of humor.
Spawning from the twisted minds of Terry Cavanagh and Stephen Lavelle, the game tells the story of a young girl, Eimear, who is about to experience the worst moments of her short Irish existence. Playing as Eimear, you get to live firsthand what it’s like when your mother hates you, your father is sex maniac, your dog is depressed, and your absent brother and speechless doll do not help the matter. And after a few peaks of undeserved sadism, the game follows its path to the grave yard…
The dreadfulness of the scenario is in no way softened by the cheerful graphics and the sweet music and sound design that accompany us throughout the game. Fortunately, the scathing dialogue, and the presence of zombies remind us that a bit of humor does help in video game survival. Here’s a glimpse of the game in four snap shots, that will hopefully convince you to delve in this truly depressing adventure.
